Yep, it's time for me as well (finally!). Today I got the acceptance letter from the school I applied to. To those who do not know, I will be studying what I love, Audio Engineering. I will be studying part-time and the course will take two years. The school is in London and the course starts in the beginning of October. However, I will be moving to London next month, so my time here at home is coming to and end! This also means that my gaming time at Mikes will be limited. I am by no means leaving (not that it's possible
), I will just not have time for any games. This all feels so unreal. I finally got my expenses covered so I can go study. I can finally study what I have wanted to for the longest time. I just love music and I want to build my future and career around it. Live sound reinforcement is where it is at for me and I am highly excited about moving to London! Rock on everybody! Tell us more about where you will be and exactly where you're going to school. Lil' Boogie heads off to school in a few weeks to study...Audio Engineering! He too is totally jazzed, especially since he gets to take both piano and guitar training at the same time. It sounds like you get to take cool classes too.
Good luck and contact us when you get settled! |

Nice! I will be at the SAE Institute in London. The school mainly focuses on recording, studio work etc, but it teaches the basics required for anything related to Audio Engineering. I already have received vast amounts of experience in the industry, running sound etc.
SAE Institute is not just in London, it's all over the world! There are lots of SAE Institutes in the US as well. |

Nice indeed! Yeah, Lil' Boogie toured the SAE facility in San Francisco and plans on attending in 2 years. He has a place to stay that's 3 blocks away, but wants to attend another school here in Indiana first. You'll be on the near north side of London which is a bit far from your home. But not quite as far as SF is from Indianapolis! Oh, and you're a couple of years older than Li' B, I think. That makes a big difference too.
Have a great time! It'll be a fantastic journey. |

In my business I deal with people who think they are Audio Engineers every day.
Keep me posted, I have been trying for years to find out where some on the crack pot ideas come from. I would be interested to know if it's taught. GOLD PLATED FUSES MAKE MY AMP SOUND BETTER. (totaly ignoring grade 9 science, in reference to the effects of passing voltage through two dissimilar metals) From the tube experts, This 6L6 has a furry sound and a rounded bottom. (Obviously an out of work wine taster). I am asked daily which Audio tube has the best sound. (Well the most expensive one of course LOL) I know we have a number of musicians at Mikes, so I will share my starving musician story. A few years back a fellow comes into my shop looking for a 2n3406 transistor (approx 0.30 cents if that). I said no problem and proceeded to pick one from stock. He's going on about having been all over town and was not able to get one. I ring it up and tell him it 30 some odd cents and he reply's I don't thing I have that much on me. Thanks all! I'm flying to London in 11 days, so on the 31st. I really can't wait!
PW, from my experience, gold plated components do not make the amp sound better, or gold plated XLR cable pins do not make the sound that goes through them better. What makes the difference with gold plated components is that they last longer and are more reliable. This is because components that are not gold plated get oxidated, or oxidized (I can't remember the correct word). In the air you have all sorts of stuff flying around and that has an effect on the surface of the components. Let's take XLR cables for example. If the pins get oxidated, you could have a loss of signal because the pins on the XLR cable do not get the correct contact with the pins on the microphone. When people have said that gold plated components sound better, they are both correct and false at the same time. They are false in the sense that the raw sound produced is the same with gold plated and non-gold plated components. Then on the other hand, they are correct because with gold plated components, you have a less chance of having possible signal loss. It's just more reliable to have gold plated components. But to bluntly say "GOLD PLATED FUSES MAKE MY AMP SOUND BETTER", that is false. I hope this helps. |

Well said Tizmo.
It's obvious that gold on gold is the perfect connection. My thing is with people that plug a gold plated connector into the nickel plated connectors on their equipment and think they have done a good thing. If you put two different metals together and pass voltage/signal through them the gold will attempt to electroplate the nickel. If you pull these connectors apart after a year you will usually find the nickel has gone black. My rule is if the equipment has nickel connectors, I use nickel connectors on my cables and just clean them every 5 years. If you look at the broadcast industry they for the most part uses nickel plated connectors and nickel plated connectors on their cables. The world will not end if you use gold plated connectors on nickel plated connectors on your equipment. You might just want to clean them a little more often. Just try to buy a HDMI cable that's nickel plated, their aren't any. Yet if you look at the back of your TV/Cable box its all nickel plated connectors. (Grade nine science) Have you heard the latest, a 2000.00 devise to demagnetize your record collection. As we all know those nasty records become magnatized and interfere with the magnet cartridge. http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue44/furutech_demag.htm My turntable is a transcripter skeleton. Picture below is from Transcripters web site. 33 lbs of plate glass, mounted on shock absorbers and has a zero mass tone arm. Maybe I should have one of those record demagnetizers, all the crazies have one.. ![]() |
